in preparation…
a few days before i install my second solo show “unfold-ed” a series of paintings, drawings and small structures that i created over the span of my ten month residency at the vermont studio center.
ten…a good number for closing and yet a beginning of a new year, my 25th and new works.
preparation for the show has been enjoyable, concentrating on a few new abstract paintings that tie into my existing motif of undulating lines and rich colors. though i am subtly moving in a different direction, my work still excites me — there remains a glimmer of perfection in each piece…hope.
in a recent conversation with a resident, i became more aware of/concerned about the hopelessness that seems to come through vsc in waves. as the conversation progressed, the artist spoke of selling “fake” art in order to create his own. when asked what is the meaning of the term by fake, he talked of selling a craft or landscape painting or something of the like…something that sells, he continued. but more disturbing was the notion that this is acceptable and he has no problem with this idea…to each his own i suppose, but where/when do you draw the line as an artist? or is this any different than working through commission? and if so what is the difference between fine art and craft? a few concerns in preparation…
