from before iii — pocket [reprise] — january 2007
in august 2001, john found a new artspace with a fellow artist. they would create a space that would come to be known as pocket in this old cigar warehouse. pocket served as a work and exhibition space for the artists and other artists working daily with a similar consciousness.
some statements from pocket:
[pocket is…] artists working in an effort to challenge the complacent conservative view of art in politics, society, culture and economics. responding with immediacy and focusing on the issues of our time as living, breathing entities. presently we choose binghamton, new york as a venue, perfect for its apathy and lack of interest… helping to allow the community to be more engaged in the daily practice of art.
pocket is a space in which art is created and experienced. to really be a part of art, one must remove themselves from the confusion of their environment, even stepping outside themselves, leaving prejudgement’s and preconceived notions behind. the viewer must be able to feel every aspect of art. as artists and as viewers we must make ourselves completely vulnerable in order to begin to learn from each other, helping to pass on experience and knowledge through cultural communication. pocket is a space where people can come together and experience art full and alive as a living, breathing entity, away from commercial stagnation and conservative mis-truths.
