tilting at windmills, the upcoming exhibition at gallery gray, examines the efforts of artists working within the year long parameter of the 2009 time frame. one can acknowledge 2009 has known the worst economic crisis since the great depression, the worst unemployment rates since the early 1980’s, the initial year of america’s first black president, rampant fear of h1n1 pandemics, and a social and political unrest the likes of which have not been seen since the late 1960’s. in such an environment it is unproblematic to identify a multitude of issues an artist could either directly or indirectly consider for conceptual fodder. what kind of art is being created in such amazing times? we at gallery gray have questioned if it is even possible for artists working during 2009 to create art impervious to the concerns of such turbulent times. simply, this exhibition examines to what extent the artwork reflects the time in which it was created.
