notes on vestige (cont.)

i erect monuments, construct icons, unveil relics and immortalize the vestiges of an over-stimulated existence.

the development of any project has always relied heavily on understanding the specific local space in which it is created. through a rigorous study of history and careful observation, an understanding of idiosyncratic moments formulate. in knowing such fragments of a space the nuances become human and help define the parameters in question. in my research i collect discarded elemental materials such as wood, metal, paper and stone. this ‘excavation’ [and recycling] of such materials begins the elevation of object to artifact — unearthing relics — then transforming them to icons. this process not only redefines the materials but allows a viewer the chance to see their physical world in a different way. it is through redefinition and appreciation that i create new meaning of objects — from formal to conceptual — redeveloping the language of art.

thoughts on installation

the latest works on paper capture the delicate, simplistic beauty and elegance of our immediate world while reflecting on an over-stimulated society. they bring imagery back to the basics and attempts to quiet the constant noise of the daily chaos. reflection comes both from the maker and the viewer. meditative and surreal, these absurd objects respond to their makers and disposers as well as call for a new meaning in terms of art. in proceeding with concern for the environment and out of respect for our communities, these pieces reflect on the evolution of art with a consciousness of the future. by being honest with ourselves and our place in this world we can begin the process of seeing more clearly through the chaos.
