day to day, move to move, i find, collect, accumulate, assemble, arrange, gather, shift, hang, frame, unframe, light; i cut, tear, crumble, measure, calculate, add, subtract, draw, erase, lighten, darken, install, de-install.
this piece deals directly with my studio practice. as in previous installations when i have worked with materials from my own practice and its accumulations, untitled: se1-49 uses materials that i have collected from two studios (with only a handful of materials brought from nyc), throughout the past 18 months and negotiates them within the space to create this specific environment. the materials have been collected over time, have been used and changed. these materials lay bare, in relation to one another, the activation of this se1 artspace. the subtlety and softness of touch are key to bringing awareness of the overall environment to the forefront.
material stays forthright as material, but with its enhanced history, functions as either elements in past pieces, failed experiments in the studio or functional aspects of the previously occupied space. whatever the source, the repurposing and shifting of material culminated in these scenarios activate the whole of the space and invite the viewer in to contemplate its subtlety.
light and air are as much considered as other materials: cement, plaster, wood, paper – as are all the elements that exist in the space naturally and prior to my occupation of it. all elements and participants of this past space are collaborators toward this current rendition. i accent tension points throughout the room to direct associations within the space and throughout one’s experience with it.
